The Monte-Carlo Television Festival has rolled out the blue carpet welcoming star guests for its 63rd edition, but it also has an eye on the future. “We’re always working towards expanding and developing the festival. Each year, we get better and better,” executive director Cécile Menoni says. Listing “fabulous highlights,” Menoni gushes over this year’s Crystal Nymph winner: Morgan Freeman. The award recognizes the “stellar body of work” of the veteran actor, who recently exec produced “The Gray House,” which celebrated its world premiere Friday at the opening ceremony. Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis and Ben Vereen attended. “It’s such a thrill for us to honor him,” Menoni says. The fest will also take a closer look at rising stars, with “Bridgerton’s” Simone Ashley given the International Golden Nymph for most promising talent. Honorary Golden Nymph – “Our festival’s highest accolade” – will go to “true fan favorite” Olivier Marchal. The French actor – and former policeman – is known for “36th Precinct.” He also created the cop series “Braquo.” “It has always been important for our festival to attract big stars and their shows. Right from the very beginning, it has been crucial to appeal to both local and global fans. We certainly have an expanded fan contingent these days, because we make sure they are well-served with a variety of events enabling them to get close to and meet their favorite stars.” That includes “selfie sessions” with “Chronicles of the Sun” team, autograph sessions with “Chicago Med,” “FBI” and “Law & Order” cast members and meetings with soap celebs from “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless.” To spotlight its 50th anniversary, “Little House on the Prairie” will host a special Anniversary Tea Party, says Menoni, while “NCIS” team Michael Weatherly, Wilmer Valderrama, Cote De Pablo and Brian Dietzen will mark the 1,000th episode of the series. “We have a long list of amazing talent joining us, including Lee Jung-jae who will be in Monaco to support the launch of Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ on Disney+,” she adds. “Buffy” alumnus David Boreanaz, also seen in “SEAL Team” and “Bones,” will return to the fest, this time as the president of the fiction jury.
“We can’t wait to see who they will select. We just know they will be the best of the best as the final selections are all extremely strong this year,” Menoni says. Taking a break from the glamour, the event will encourage conversations about the ever-changing industry landscape during Business Content sessions, addressing the impact of 2023 strikes, A.I. controversies – and the new tools it provides – as well as changes in international co-productions. “We have a great lineup,” she says, mentioning “in-depth panel discussions on important and timely subjects,” from “Bringing the World to Light Through TV Drama” to “New Narratives for Documentaries: The Blur Between Reality & Fiction.” Unsurprisingly, many “emotional documentaries” will be featured as well, including “Ukraine’s War: The Other Side,” “Ukrainian Chronicles,” “Broken Dreams,” “Lie to Me,” “Uvda: Table for Eight” and “Mines of Death,” while “stellar” official selection includes four world premieres: “Madam” with Rachel Griffiths (produced by Tavake and XYZ Films), “Alone at Sea” (High Sea Production), “Night Therapy” (Yes TV) and German offering “Der Heimweg” (Ziegler Films). “The Law of the Sea,” “The Good Wife” spinoff “Elsbeth,” “Little Did I Know,” “Helgoland 513” and “The Gathering” will be screened for the first time in France. “It’s always interesting to see how an audience responds. I find it difficult to watch [with them] sometimes, but I let other people tell me how they reacted,” “The Gathering” actor Vinette Robinson says with a laugh. “There is nothing like the live, collective response. It’s unusual for television, but it can really heighten how the piece hits. To come to Monte Carlo, to have such a local, British show and see how universal it really is… It widens the audience.” Martina Haag, “Little Did I Know” creator and director, agrees: “Showcasing your film or series and engaging with viewers directly can help boost the visibility and success of your show. Viewers who have a positive interaction with the creators and cast are more likely to become enthusiastic promoters. Also, festivals are fun and vibrant events where the hard work of the cast and crew is recognized and appreciated.” “All these special events highlight the accessibility and relevance of the festival, which continues to be a must-attend event for worldwide talent, producers, writers, distributors, streamers, industry professionals and, of course, the public,” Menoni sums up. “We hope this year’s edition delivers on its promise of celebrating the very best programming from around the world and, looking to the future of the entertainment industry, [figuring out] how it can continue to entertain, inspire and educate people throughout the globe.”

Ice by Ed McBain
Ice by Ed McBain. It is the 36th book of the 87th Precinct series. It was published in 1983. Snow whips through the city’s streets like lethal daggers when a young actress leaves the theater after her latest performance. She walks home instead of taking the subway, and soon the snow on the ground is stained red with her blood. A cold, hard winter is blowing in, and it’s bringing greed and…

Brooklyn shooting: at least 13 injured at New York subway station | New York | The Guardian
Thirteen people were injured following a shooting on a subway platform in New York City on Tuesday morning, authorities said, adding that “several undetonated devices” were found. Police later said none were “active explosive devices”.
A suspect, described as a Black man wearing a gas mask and an orange construction vest, fled the scene, authorities said.
A New York fire department (NYFD) spokesperson told the Guardian that at about 8.30am, firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the D, N and R lines at the 36th Street station in Sunset Park in Brooklyn.
Firefighters arrived to find multiple people shot and “several undetonated devices”.
The spokesperson said 13 people were injured but stopped short of saying how many had been shot.
A spokesperson for the New York police department (NYPD) confirmed that multiple people were shot but could not say how many or their condition.
Officers were searching for the suspect, the NYPD spokesperson said. The suspect was about 5ft 5in and about 180lb, the spokesperson said.
Authorities were expected to release more information from the 72nd police precinct in Brooklyn later, the spokesperson added.
Police asked witnesses with any information to call 800-577-Tips. ...

44, 45, and 48!!
4644. Last Line you wrote?
For which fic? I’ll just do them all.
Musician with Poison tears: He no longer had to practice in secret, so he usually played in his room with the door open in case anyone wanted to listen.
Confidante (Hond fic): Clopin’s harsh glare turned to a sly grin. “That’s what I like to hear.”
Love is a verb: (Modern au HoND): “Too bad Y2K didn’t kill us all, huh?”
Invader Zim fic outline: “What are you talking about? Of course we had war! Those damn Baftons thought they had a right to the 36th precinct of the Domgin galaxy!”
45. What spurs you on during the writing process?
Ideas start comin’ and they don’t stop comin’
Back to the word doc and I hit the keys typin’
Seriously, I try to keep myself on a low-commitment schedule. I just need to work on at least 1 fic for 1 hour each day. Sometimes I do more than that, sometimes I do less then that, but the regularity of the schedule at least keeps me on track. I also like to pre-write my chapters in notebooks using fun-colored gel pens then type them up later. There’s just something about seeing your stories written in neon green cursive...
I think the biggest help, though, is when you have someone to bounce ideas off of.
48. Favorite trope to write?
oh God don’t make me choose.
I love friends-to-lovers and also enemies-to-friends. It’s fun to see how your characters will interact with familiar characters in new ways and growing the relationships, whatever the nature of those relationships may be.
I also love writing manipulative villains. It’s just exciting to feel the slime ooze through your veins as you imagine their every despicable thought.
Answering questions from this ask.

Subway rider Fitim Gjeloshi recalled Frank James prior to the shooting
Subway rider Fitim Gjeloshi recalled how he was on the Manhattan-bound N train just before 8:30 a.m. in Brooklyn when he noticed the suspect sitting in the corner, muttering to himself.
“I looked at him, and I thought to myself he was talking to himself for like awhile, so I looked at him, and I was like, this guy must be on drugs,” Gjeloshi said outside the 72nd Precinct in Sunset Park after talking to cops Tuesday afternoon. When the train briefly stopped underground after leaving the 59th Street station, the suspect suddenly whipped out a gas mask, Gjeloshi said. “When [the train] was about to hit 36th Street, we stopped for 5 minutes. He takes out a gas mask from one of his little luggage[s],” the witness said.

#justalittlehistory Bedford–Stuyvesant has the largest collection of intact and largely untouched Victorian architecture in the country, with roughly 8,800 buildings built before 1900.[7] Its building stock includes many historic brownstones. These homes were developed for the expanding middle- to upper-middle class from the 1890s to the late 1910s. These homes contain highly ornamental detailing throughout their interiors and have classical architectural elements, such as brackets, quoins, fluting, finials, and elaborate frieze and cornice banding. Since the late 1930s the neighborhood has been a major cultural center for Brooklyn's African American population. Following the construction of the Fulton Street subway line (A and C trains)[8] in 1936, African Americans left an overcrowded Harlem for greater housing availability in Bedford–Stuyvesant. From Bedford–Stuyvesant, African Americans have since moved into the surrounding areas of Brooklyn, such as East New York, Crown Heights, Brownsville, and Fort Greene. Bedford–Stuyvesant is mostly part of Brooklyn Community District 3, though a small part is also in Community District 8. Its primary ZIP Codes are 11205, 11206, 11216, 11221, 11233, and 11238.[1][2] Bedford–Stuyvesant is patrolled by the 79th and 84th Precincts of the New York City Police Department.[9][10] Politically it is represented by the New York City Council's 36th District. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford–Stuyvesant,_Brooklyn #bedfordstuyvesant #bedstuy #stuyvesantheights #thestuy #community #history #knowyouknow #brooklyn @brownstonersbedstuyhousetour (at Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAVDUgoFqW7/?igshid=1qc9rkhi48q26

James Harris Jackson, the 28-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing a 66-year-old man in midtown on Monday night, took a Bolt Bus from Baltimore, Maryland to NYC last Friday with the explicit intention of harming black men, according to Manhattan Chief of Detectives William Aubry.
"He picked New York because it's the media capital of the world and he wanted to make a statement," Aubry told reporters during an unrelated press conference on Wednesday.
Aubry did not confirm reports that Jackson is a member of a Maryland-based hate group and has written a manifesto on his hatred of black people. Nor that he surrendered to stop himself from attacking an interracial couple. But Aubry insisted that a preliminary investigation, and initial interviews with Jackson, suggest the attack was racially motivated.
"He was specifically intending to target male blacks for assault," Aubry said.
"He has been harboring these types of feelings for quite some time. For well over ten years."
Police believe Jackson killed 66-year-old Timothy Caughman just before 11:30 p.m. on Monday. He allegedly stabbed Caughman, a black man who reportedly lived in nearby transitional housing for HIV/AIDS patients, near the intersection of West 36th Street and 9th Avenue. Caughman walked to the Midtown South Precinct to report that he had been stabbed, and died at Bellevue Hospital around 1:00 a.m.
Jackson spent the weekend leading up to the murder at a Midtown hotel. According to the police, surveillance footage shows him "walking in circles through Midtown" before attacking Caughman. "He was roaming through the streets," Aubry said. "Our victim happened to be going through garbage on the sidewalk. There happened to be no one else around."
Not called a terrorist.

IntroductionOn this day 100 years ago, the Tennessee House of Representatives voted 50-49 to approve a women's suffrage amendment to the US Constitution, becoming the 36th state to do so and rendering operative what is now known as the 19th Amendment (the tie-breaking representative in that vote, Harry Burn, was initially an opponent to suffrage, but was persuaded by his mother to cast a vote for the amendment). This was a critical goal of a broader movement that had begun over a half century prior with the Seneca Falls Convention to define women's rights in the United States. In honor of the important milestone that's being commemorated today, we are bringing back this discussion thread on resources for voting in the upcoming presidential election in November. With signs that voter turnout may be the highest in living memory, if not in the entire history of the United States, it is imperative for folks regardless of their political persuasion to make sure that they are eligible to vote, and that they will vote if at all possible. Please take the opportunity to share voter resources and discuss the state of voting in this thread, as well as to use the resources below to register, check if you're registered, or request a mail ballot if applicable. Regardless of whether you want to Keep America Great or Restore the Soul of America, democracy is not a spectator sport, and the efforts made a century ago by suffragettes and by civil rights activists in the decades since speaks to how important the right to vote is to American democracy.Early and Mail VotingAside from registering to vote, with the coronavirus pandemic, a number of voters are now also planning to vote by mail. Absentee voting has been a part of American elections since the Civil War, when election officials followed Union armies and tallied votes from soldiers which may have impacted the outcome of the 1864 Presidential Election. In modern times, alternatives to voting on election day at home typically come in the form of vote by mail (VBM) or absentee ballots, and early in-person voting.Vote by Mail is mandated in at least some form (overseas ballot) by federal law, and thus is available in all states in at least some form, typically for military and overseas voters as well as voters with bona fide impairments. 29 states offer no-excuse absentee voting, meaning any eligible voter may cast an absentee ballot, but with the pandemic this year, an additional 12 states are permitting concerns over contracting the coronavirus as a valid excuse for a mail ballot. When considering whether to vote by mail, check how well your state does when it comes to managing these ballots, as some states, such as Utah and Colorado, have extensive experience with vote by mail (by virtue of being all-mail states), while others, such as Michigan, have only recently adopted this form of voting. Additionally, there are often additional safeguards when voting by mail to verify your identity, such as requiring a witness signature on your ballot in a number of states, so it is imperative that you check these requirements to give yourself enough time before casting a ballot.Mail voting is not without its issues. Only 14 states (only 5 of which, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Texas and Virginia, are remotely considered swing states) count ballots that were received after election day, even if they were postmarked the day of or the day before the election. Recent events with the US Postal Service call into question whether ballots can be delivered in a timely fashion to meet these deadlines, so if you do opt to vote by absentee ballot, it is important that you cast your ballot early to minimize the chance of it not counting. In some states, you may also be able to correct possible deficiencies in your ballot, so the earlier you cast your vote, the better chance you'll have the time to do this if something goes wrong.Additionally, the primaries this year with coronavirus have seen a relatively high rejection rate for mail ballots. In the crucial swing state of Florida, over 18,000 ballots were rejected during the presidential primary, a number larger than the difference in votes in Florida's contested 2018 Senate election, as well as Florida's infamous 2000 presidential election. In Wisconsin's April presidential primary, which stands a good chance of being the tipping point state this year, over 23,000 absentee ballots were rejected, slightly more than the margin of victory President Trump secured in the state in 2016. Wisconsin was previously decided in 2004 by about 12,000 votes and in 2000 by a little over 5,000. About a quarter of rejected ballots (p17) in 2016 were for missing the ballot deadline, and nearly half were rejected for either failure to sign, or for having a non-matching signature.Early In-Person Voting is an alternative form of early voting which involves a voter casting a ballot or dropping off a ballot at a physical polling place, typically a county registrar's office as opposed to their typical physical polling precinct. This is not offered in as many states (though, of the swing states, only Colorado (which is all-mail), New Hampshire and Pennsylvania do not offer this option), but for the ones where it is, it's a great alternative to VBM or risking the crowds on election day. States offer early in-person voting anywhere from 4 to 45 days before the election, which gives you flexibility to decide when to cast a ballot in a safe way. Check to see if your state offers early in-person voting here.Voter Registration ResourcesBelow are some voter registration resources:Federal Voting Assistance ProgramUSAGOV (register to vote and also confirming your registration)ACLU Know Your RightsVote.orgRock the VoteFive Thirty Eight Voting GuideAxios' Guide to When and How to Vote in all 50 StatesNational Association of Secretaries of StateBusiness Insider Guide to Voter Registration DeadlinesKeep in mind the following when voting this November:Check your registration. It doesn't matter if you registered this year or years before, check your registration to make sure that you're still on the voter rolls, both now, and about when you plan to cast your ballot. Mistakes happen to voter rolls that have the unfortunate effect of disenfranchising voters - you can help avoid this by checking early so you have time to re-register or correct deficiencies.Make sure your voter registration information is current. If you've moved or even if you use a new email, make sure that your information is up-to-date, as it will affect your eligibility as a voter, as well as who you're able to vote for. If you're in college in a different state or jurisdiction, check to make sure you fulfill appropriate residency requirements where you choose to cast a ballot.Register early. Voter registration is already open if you haven't done so yet, and in many states, you are able to register even if you aren't 18 yet, as long as you will turn 18 by election day (this is also the standard in some states for primary votes too), but you want to give yourself some time to make sure this is processed. In states where voter registration or absentee voting applications need to be mailed, any disruption or delay in receiving or sending the application will run the risk of failing to meet the registration deadline, and in others, you may need to have some proof of residency or other identification that is not necessarily easy to obtain last minute.Check local resources. The vast majority of people will not have a problem registering or casting a ballot, but mistakes happen (or pollworkers may be misinformed), and you want to be apprised of what resources you have at your disposal to ensure you can cast a vote. Both major parties will have voter hotlines as votes begin to be cast, and each state should have a resource available as well. via /r/politics
